Starbucks to update free water and bathroom policies
Starbucks has revealed significant changes to its cafes, set to take effect at the end of this month, sparking a wave of reactions from customers. The coffee giant has introduced a new "Coffeehouse Code of Conduct," which marks a departure from its previous open-door policy, as stated on their website.
This new code aims to clarify that Starbucks locations, including cafes, patios, and restrooms, are intended solely for the use of customers and staff. The company emphasizes the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment, but the shift raises questions about inclusivity and accessibility.
In contrast to this new approach, a message from August 2020 highlighted Starbucks' commitment to being a "third place" that fosters a culture of warmth and belonging. The updated Code of Conduct outlines strict prohibitions against various forms of misconduct, including discrimination, violence, and substance use, with potential legal consequences for those who do not comply.
Additionally, an alleged memo from Starbucks that was shared on Reddit notes that non-paying customers will no longer be able to receive free water.
"Free water is restricted to a person making a purchase in our store and those accompanying them," the memo reads.
Hmmm...interesting. I don't think this will affect SCV much. We have a tight community, and if you need water and a restroom...well, they most likely won't hesitate as long as you are respectful.
