Joann's set to close over 500 locations: A sad day for crafters.

Joann is set to close hundreds of its stores, including a full list of 61 stores in California.

The crafting and fabric retailer has announced plans to shut down over half of its remaining outlets after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in under a year. This decision comes as the company seeks to streamline its operations and adapt to current market conditions.

The bankruptcy court motion filed by Joann indicates that approximately 533 of its 800 U.S. stores will be closed, impacting at least one location in every state except Hawaii. The states facing the most significant closures include California, with 61 stores, followed by Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, each with 33 closures. The company expressed the difficulty of this decision, acknowledging the profound effects it will have on employees, customers, and the communities they serve.

Joann's history dates back to 1943, starting with a single store in Cleveland, Ohio, and evolving into a national chain. After a restructuring in April 2024, the company transitioned to a private entity and was delisted from the U.S. stock exchange. While the timeline for these closures and the number of employees affected remain uncertain, Joann is actively seeking court approval to proceed with the necessary steps.
